Fantastic piece. Incredibly refreshing to see this interpretation and some challenge to the op-ed industrial complex's insistence on converts being purely motivated by the Church's teaching on sexual morality plus smells and bells (I think that's a part of it, but just a part of it).

I read a note a few weeks back along the lines of “The state of Israel wears Judaism like a skin suit.” The First Things folk seem to wear Catholicism as so, or maybe I’m being too harsh.

If the Pope were to come out in favor of Trump and his wars, MAGA would drop the "the Pope should stick to religion!" schtick like a hot turd.

Nice. But could one argue the Pope is merely reflecting the European position that the Mideast wars are contrary to European interests, threatening their pipeline and power? I hope you are right though.

They happen to overlap, but I don’t think so. Francis significantly changed the Vatican’s role as a state actor. The mission is no longer to expand the influence of Catholicism on state and cultural affairs but to serve as a check against ideologies that are anti-Catholic (imperialism, exploitation, xenophobia). Its goals mostly align with EU liberal interests, but I don’t think that’s because it’s a calculated play to preserve power
